Well it's winter, and there is a pretty good chance that quite a few of you reading this are just not feeling healthy as a horse and might be feeling a bit under the weather. Not surprising at all. It's cold. It's dark. The wind is blowing. Icicles are forming. Slush is slushing. You're sitting around all day waiting for spring. Of course you're sick! Get up! Get out! Don't let the winter bring you down!
Here's some advice to keep you away from the doctor, the aspirin, the vaporizer, and the tissues.
Eat good, wholesome foods. Give your body what it needs to keep your strength up, to fight those wicked germs, to build up a strong potent immune system. You know what I mean. More veggies, cooked and raw in salads. More fruit, in season like citrus, out of season, like everything else. Remember how lucky we are that we can get strawberries from all over the world, even in the dead of winter. Fruit is delicious and good for you, too.
Take vitamins. Just in case you don't eat what you need every day. Just be careful not to take too many. Vitamins can be too much of a good thing, so stick to recommended doses.
Get off your derriere and do some exercise. Indoor facilities abound. Go bowling, dancing, ice skating, roller skating, billiards, even darts or card games are better than watching TV all day, or surfing the internet.
What?! You haven't gotten your flu shots yet?! Well, call the doctor, make an appointment and get immunized you goof! Do you know that over 4,000 people have already died from swine flu in the U.S. so far this year? Did you know that in 1918 about 40 million people died from influenza worldwide? That's more people than died from the plague in 4 years from 1347 to 1351. What are you waiting for?
Do I also need to tell you to get enough sleep? This is usually not a problem for most people, unless of course they work, or have kids, or like to party, or watch TV until late at night, or go out to restaurants, or movies, or bars. A well-rested body is better able to fight off those viral critters lurking all over just waiting for a chance to make you sick. Get to bed!
Oh, did I say go to bars. I certainly hope you don't drink alcohol. Very bad for your bod. Not only does it make it hard to drive, talk, think, whatever - it is very destructive to your immune system.
I think I've made it clear that there are some very concrete things you can do this winter to keep healthy and happy. Stay well, and we'll meet again in the spring, just in time for allergy season. Aaachooo!
